Plymouth Well Project

2019 Plymouth Well Project header

BACKGROUND
In September 2017, Benton County was awarded a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the amount of $750,000 for thePlymouth Water District Well Project.

These funds would be used by the Plymouth Water District to drill a new well for safe drinking water for the Plymouth community. The engineer for this project is  Gray & Osborne, Inc. (based out of Yakima).

Each spring, nitrate levels in the community well rise, jeopardizing the health of the residents. With nitrates at these levels, Plymouth residents must turn to bottled water for safe consumption.

The sole employee of the Plymouth Water District is tasked with acquiring this water - approximately 1.5 gallons per person per day. With approximately 220 residents, that means the District spends around $27,000 each summer on bottled water.

The new well will provide the Plymouth community with safe, fresh drinking water for many years.

PROJECT FUNDING
The total cost of the new well and pump house is estimated to be $1,398,128.00.

Plymouth Water District: $52,128
State CDBG Program: $750,000
USDA Grant: $409,000
USDA Loan: $197,000

ABOUT THE WATER RESERVOIR
The water reservoir is located north of the township of Plymouth and Highway 14 and west of Plymouth Road. It has a capacity of 250,000 gallons of water. The reservoir is constructed of steel and has a visible float system on the outside to see the water level.

WHERE WE ARE NOW - PHASES
Phase 1 of the project has begun, and includes awarding a bid to O'Keefe Drilling Co. for drilling the well. This phase is expected to be completed by November 20, 2019 (subject to change), including additional testing.

Phase 2 consists of both the design and installation of the well and all equipment. This includes the well pump, building, and all associated equipment needed to produce potable water from the new well. Design of Phase 2 will take approximately three (3) months to complete. Once design is completed, a separate bid for construction will be awarded. Construction of Phase 2 will take approximately six (6) months to complete.

Project completion is anticipated Fall 2020. Unfortunately, this means that the Plymouth community will likely have to endure one more summer of bottled water before the new community well is approved for use.
