Small Businesses - Small Quantity Generators

If you are a business owner that generates dangerous waste (sometimes referred to as hazardous waste), you may be a small quantity generator (SQG) in Washington State. Definitions between the federal (EPA) and state (ECY) levels vary, but can generally be summarized as follows:

  • ECY small quantity generator (SQG) -OR- EPA conditionally exempt small quantity generator (CESQG):
    • <220 pounds of dangerous waste generated per month
    • <2,200 pounds of dangerous waste held on site
    • <2.2 pounds of acutely or extremely hazardous  waste generated per month
  • ECY medium quantity generator (MQG) -OR- EPA small quantity generator (SQG):
    • Between 220 and 2,200 pounds of dangerous waste generated per month
    • <2,200 pounds of dangerous waste held on site
    • <2.2 pounds of acutely or extremely hazardous waste generated per month
  • ECY large quantity generator (LQG) -OR- EPA large quantity generator (LQG)
    • >2,200 pounds of dangerous waste generated per month
    • >2,200 pounds of waste held on site
    • >2.2 pounds of acutely or extremely hazardous waste generated per month

Please note that in order to be considered an ECY SQG or ECY MQG, your company must meet all of the qualifications stated in the definition. If it does not, it is automatically moved into the next category into which it fits. For more information, please visit the following webpage:

If you are an ECY SQG, you may qualify to participate in a Benton County solid waste program SQG waste collection event. These events are held regularly each year, subject to funding by the Washington State Department of Ecology. The next SQG event is June 9, 2017.
